As a father, my greatest desire is that our three children, all girls, will grow to love Christ more than their own lives. I pray continually for this very thing. However, I understand that this will not happen accidentally. A father cannot expect that his children, boys or girls, will somehow become godly individuals without his constant input into their little lives. Our great God, through Moses, stated this plainly.
And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, he said to them, ‘Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.’”
As well, Moses said in Deuteronomy 6,
Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord you God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
The point: never stop teaching your children the words of God. The glory of God isn’t a subject to be taught after your child comes in from P.E. Instead, the glory of God is the point of every subject.
Because of this, we seek to baptize our children daily in the Scriptures. The aim of math is God’s glory; the aim of history is God’s glory; the aim of science is God’s glory; the aim of discipline is God’s glory. And then we pray, and we trust.
The title mentions Proverbs 31. When I read Proverbs 31, I see a godly woman. So I’m going to spend time going through this portion of God’s word to determine practical ways that I can guide the channels of my children’s hearts to become this woman. And I plan to share my thoughts regarding these several Scriptures with you. I invite your feedback and wisdom as well.
By the way, fathers of boys I believe the introductory to this section of Scripture, Pr 10:31, is a challenge to your children: “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.” I’ll begin with comments on this in the next day or so.
